The main port city of Italy, capitol of the Liguria region with a rich history: that is Genoa. The
Romans already had their fleet in Genoa and after the fall of the Roman Empire Genoa grew into a
major trading port and eventually became a city republic. Explorer Christopher Columbus was born
in Genoa.
The historic center narrates this rich history. Piazza de Ferrari is the heart of the city center,
surrounded by historical buildings including the Teatro Carlo Felice and Palazzo Ducale. A large
part of the square is occupied by a huge fountain. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo and La Lanterna,
the old lighthouse an accompanying museum are part of the many attractions the city has to offer.
The aquarium of Genoa is a populair destination, in addition to the various museums Genoa has to
offer.
It is not only the largest aquarium of Italy but even the third largest in Europe.
