Val Roya
It has always been an important communication route between the Ligurian sea and the mountains of Piemonte. To re-live its history you can use part of the Ventimiglia-Cuneo railway line, in that the stations can be starting points for walks. The lower valley has the scent of the Ligurian hinterland, and its small villages huddled on slopes covered by secular olive groves. Suddenly the atmosphere changes becoming more alpine and every change of altitude is verified by the changing vegetation. The railway, active since 1928 crosses twice the 50 km. of French frontier and offers the passengers a journey through a scenery of meadows, pine-tree woods, gorges and streams which frame the enchanting villages set between the mountains.
Mountain bike lovers can put their bikes directly on the train. Anyone who does not like walking trips can simply enjoy visiting the various Italian and French villages using the train.
