Bussana Vecchia

Just above Sanremo is “the dead town”, destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1887. Amongst its ruins, artist and craftsmen, from all over the world have found refuge, protected by the Sanctuary built by the survivors of the earthquake. In the old church of St. Egidio, never re-built, can still be seen trace of stucco work and original paintings; it can be viewed only from the exterior as it is unsafe. The church belfry was miraculously spared by the earthquake and is therefore seen as the town’s symbol by the inhabitants of Bussana Vecchia.
